Sandro Botticelli – La nascita di Venere – It is easy to imagine that the painter worked with high respect for presenting this myth in an elevated way. We quickly understand what is happening in the painting: Venus has emerged from the sea on a shell, brought to the shore by the gods of the winds Zephyr and Aura, wings spread. As Venus prepares to set foot on land, the Hora of Spring greets her with a purple mantle and a multitude of rosebuds. Boticelli’s Venus is so beautiful that we do not notice the unnatural length of her neck, her lowered shoulders, and the strange way in which her left arm is positioned on her body. Instead, we are ready to acknowledge that these liberties, which Botticelli has allowed himself in relation to nature, in order to achieve lovely outlines, contribute to the beauty and harmony of this image because they reinforce the impression of endless tenderness and subtlety of a being which, as a gift from heaven, has sailed to our shores. The melancholic gaze and posture of the goddess maintain the knowledge of the transience of all that exists. (W)
